297,000 new private-sector jobs were added in December 2010. Only roughly 32,000 jobs were cut in December 2010. Economists are projecting that 2.3 million jobs will be added in all of 2011. (http://money.cnn.com/2011/01/05/news/economy/jobs_outlook/index.htm?hpt=T2)

What are you doing? Are you browsing the internet because you're bored at work, or because you're looking for a new job, or just because you are a friend of Epikos? Guest Speaking Opportunity

I have been invited to be the guest speaker for the Bridgeport Transitions Group of Vienna Presbyterian Church on December 8th. Their meetings last from 7pm - 8:45pm.

I have not yet decided on my topic, but I have asked for input from their coordinator as to what topics are most relevant to their demographic regarding resumes and job hunting.

It's been a while since I've been in front of a crowd of strangers, so my presentation skills are a bit rusty. Guess who will be practicing in front of a mirror.

More "What NOT To Do" Resume Tips

Based on "Funny job resumes: What not to list as experiences," written by the American Press on September 20, 2010.

1. Do not list God as a reference. Yes, I am sure He can attest to your greatest strenghts and weaknesses, but I'm not so sure that a hiring manager will see the humor in trying to call, email, text, or otherwise contact God. When listing references, choose to list real people. (Santa doesn't count, either. Sorry.)

2. Do not put a picture of yourself at the top of your resume or cover letter. Do not pose provocatlively for a picture to put at the top of your resume. Do not put someone else's picture on your resume. And do not put your cat's picture on your resume. Just don't put a picture on your resume. It does not help. Hiring managers will file it away...in the trash can.

3. While resumes DO need to be longer than one page, do NOT send in a 20+ page resume and expect someone to read it. Hiring managers spend 30-60 seconds reviewing your resume. That's all, unless they really like you right away.

4. I encourage you to list accomplishments in your employment and your education sections. However, use discretion when choosing what to list. Make sure the accomplishment is relevant to your skill set, shows leadership, or will help you make a connection with a particular hiring manager. For example, unless you are applying for a video game-related job, it is probably not a good idea to mention that you "won a frat house Nintendo championship" (Associated Press). However, if you led your golf team to win a national championship AND you know that a particular hiring manager is a golf fan, you may list it.

I promise I won't take much of your time.

I've been published!

In June I wrote a blog post on the 5 Worst Resume Mistakes. The Professional Association of Resume Writers (PARW) published it as a 1-page article in the September edition of their newsletter. To my surprise, I received a check (small, but a check nontheless) as an honorarium. The check essentially covers half of the yearly membership dues.

To read the original article on this blog, go to the June 18th.

Thanks for reading!

Resume formats

Most people are familiar with resumes in the .doc or .docx formats. I generally provide my clients with a .pdf version of their private-sector resumes and cover letters, in addition to the .doc version.

Two other resume formats exist, but I question their usefulness. One version is ASCII (plain text) and the other is HTML.

Has anyone ever had a need for a resume in ASCII (plain text) or HTML? If so, please explain the circumstances to me so I can determine if this service would be beneficial to my clients.
